DescriptionIn 1888 the Paddington Velodrome was the first cycle track to be built in London. It continued to operate for nearly a hundred years prior to its demolition in 1987. Other velodromes were constructed at Herne Hill, Catford, West Ham, Putney, Kensal Rise and Wood Green. Prior to the construction of the new velodrome in Stratford for the 2012 Olympics, the only remaining velodrome in London is at Herne Hill. Originally built in 1891, the Herne Hill Velodrome hosted the track cycling events in the 1948 London Olympics.
