Description | Watercolour by E Angell Roberts. Emanuel Hospital, James Street was one of a number of almshouses in Westminster founded by private individuals for the benefit of the aged poor. In 1602 four acres on the edge of Tothill Fields, near the site of the St James's hotel, Buckingham Gate were purchased under the will of Lady Dacre. There was provision for two men and ten women, who were all required to attend daily service in the Hospital chapel. this view was painted in 1887 shortly before the building was demolished. |
