Description | Postcard of the Nave of Westminster Abbey. The view looks east towards the choir screen, with the monuments to Sir Isaac Newton and James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope. The tomb of the Unknown Warrior lies in the foreground. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'Nave, looking East. A superb picture of the most perfectly lovely building in London. Note the height of the pointed arches, the magnificent triforium above them, the glorious vaulted roof. Burials in the Nave did not take place till after the dissolution of the monasteries, but here in the foreground is the Grave of the Unknown Soldier, buried here on Armistice Day, November 11th 1921, and a place of pilgrimage ever since'. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck & Sons in the 'Photogravure' series (no. 2160). |
