DescriptionPortrait of C.H. Workman and Louie Réné as the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'The Gondoliers'. They wear early eighteenth-century costume and stand together with their hands clasped in one another's. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'The Duke of Plaza-Toro is that "celebrated, cultivated, under-rated nobleman" whose peculiarities and antics give rise to so much amusement during the course of the play. The Duchess is his accomplished wife, to whose careful assistance and affectionate watchfulness much of the Duke's boasted perfection is attributable. They are the parents of the charming Casilda, the bride of the King of Barataria.'
