Title[Portrait of Louie Réné and Jessie Rose in Iolanthe]
DescriptionPortrait of Jessie Rose in the title role of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'Iolanthe', with Louie Réné as the Queen of the Fairies. Rose poses in a kneeling position beside the Réné, who gestures with her left hand to her, while Rose wears a robe of foliage and flowers. As Queen of the Fairies, Réné wears a winged helmet and carries a spear. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck for the 'Play Pictorial' series. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'The Queen of the Fairies at whose decree Iolanthe is banished from Fairyland for having married a mortal. After twenty-five years' exile at the bottom of a stream, she is recalled, at the intercession of her fellows, and pardoned: "For a dark sin against our fairy laws, We sent thee into banishment; But mercy holds her sway within our hearts - Rise! Thou art pardoned!!"'.
