DescriptionThese documents were part of the personal papers of John Charles Herries (1778-1855), in his capacity as Financial Secretary to the Treasury, a position which he held from 1823 to 1827. They concern the financing of the project and the decision to complete the construction following the death of the Duke of York. He was the eldest son of Charles Herries, a London merchant and Colonel in the London and Westminster Light Horse Volunteers (see Accession 2155). John Charles Herries was educated in Leipzig and held a wide range of public offices, including Secretary and Registrar of the Order of the Bath 1809-1822, Commissary-in-Chief 1811-1816, MP for Harwich 1823-1841, Chancellor of the Exchequer in Goderich's ministry 1827-1828, Master of the Mint 1828-1830, President of the Board 1830, Secretary-at-War 1834-1835, MP for Stamford 1847-1853 and President of the Board of Control in 1852.

As well as letters from the Duke of York this collection includes correspondence with a number of significant people, including Lord Liverpool, Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), Sir Henry Parnell (1776-1842), Nathan Meyer Rothschild, financier (1777-1836) and William Wilkins, architect (1778-1839).
