| Description | Label reads: Charing Cross, 1795. The origin of the name Charing Cross has never been satisfactorily explained. Here was erected, 1291-1294, a stone cross indicating the spot where the body of Queen Eleanor rested on its way to interment in Westminster Abbey. The original cross was pulled down about 1647. A facsimile of the cross now stands in the forecourt of Charing Cross Station. Coloured engraving, published by T Malton. |
