| Description | St John's Smith Square looking from Millbank down Dean Stanley Street, which was called Church Street at the time this photograph was taken in 1892. Designed by Thomas Archer in the baroque style, it was completed in 1728 after starting to sink into the marshy ground beneath. It was never popular, described by Charles Dickens as "some petrified monster, frightful and gigantic, on its back with legs in the air". It was bombed in 1941 but was painstakingly restored in the 1960s as a concert hall. |
