TitleThe New Law Courts (looking down Fleet Street)
DescriptionThis site in the Strand, then an insalubrious slum was bought in 1861 to bring together all the superior courts concerned with civil, rather than criminal cases. G E Street was appointed architect but a combination of labour troubles, bad weather and financial difficulties meant that although the building was begun in 1871 it was not completed until 1882. The stress of the project contributed to Street's death and his statue is in the main hall. The building seen here about 1896 contained nineteen courts but was extended in 1891 to provide more and again in 1968.
