Title | [View of the Watergate, York Buildings] |
Description | Handwritten legend reads: York Watergate. This gate stands at the bottom of Buckingham Street, Strand. It was built for George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, as an entrance from the river to the new house he had erected there. The house was pulled down about 1672. The waterworks shown in the view were established in the reign of Charles II. They were burned down in 1690 and re-erected; the works resulted in a loss and were closed in 1829.
