Title | [View of Emanuel Hospital, Buckingham Gate] |
Description | Watercolour by J P Emslie. Under the will of Anne Lady Dacre, who died in 1595, the Emanuel Hospital was founded to provide almshouses for the aged poor. Strict regulations forbade them to swear or drink alcohol. The establishment of the Brown Coat School was delayed until 1736, after which time old and young lived together. The school moved out to Wandsworth in 1883. This watercolour of 1892 shows the 1701 buildings with the chapel in the centre shortly before demolition to make way for St James's Court in Buckingham Gate. |
