Description | Russell Mockridge (1928-1958) was rated by many as the great ever Australian rider. He had previously won double gold in the sprint and time trial in the 1950 Commonwealth Games (as well as silver in the 4km persuit). At the Helsinki Olympics he again won double gold in the mens individual time trial (1km) and the mens tandem sprint (200m). In 1953 he turned professional and went on to win three Australian road titles. He was tragically killed in 1958 when he was hit by a bus whilst competing in the Tour of Gippsland. In this race he was competing against two of his rivals from Helsinki, the Englsih Champion Cyril Peacock who subsequently went on to win gold in the sprint at the 1954 Commonwealth Games and Don McKellow runner up in the English Championships, who had finished 5th in Helsinki.
