Title[View of old houses in the Sanctuary]
DescriptionThe sanctuary was a privileged precinct under the protection of the monks of Westminster Abbey. The Sanctuary was abolished by King James I. Thieving (Thieves) Lane (later Great George Street) was so called because thieves were taken that way to the Gate House Prison to avoid the Sanctuary.
