TitleWestminster Abbey, the High Altar
DescriptionPostcard of the High Altar of Westminster Abbey. The altar rail obscures the altar table, but above it the altar screen can be seen, with Salviati's mosaic of the Last Supper. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'The High Altar. The Sanctuary or space within the Altar rails were coronations take place, has a venerable pavement of mosaics brought from Rome and laid about 1268. On the left are three very beautiful architectural tombs, painted and gilded with exquisite sculptures, while on the right are ancient seats dating from the time of Edward I. Note the beautiful view beyond, of the arches above the shrine of Edward I'. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck & Sons in the 'Photogravure' series (no. 2160).
