Title | [View of Thieving Lane] |
Description | View of Thieving Lane from King Street, with the west towers of Westminster Abbey behind. The caption reads: 'North-east view of the entrance to Thieving Lane, from King Street: taken after the houses at the corners were pulled down. - When the liquor shop with the twisted pillars was removed, the stone bases of the gateway or entrance to the Sanctuary were exposed to view. The clumsy and insecure mode of building in ancient times is here exhibited, which gives a striking proof of the value of modern party-walls'. Drawn by J.T. Smith, 30 Nov 1807; engraved by W.M. Fellows.Published by John Thomas Smith, 14 April 1808. E138 Thieving Lane (1) & (4) are duplicates, (12) is a coloured version. |
