TitleThe Drum Major of sedition
DescriptionSatirical print relating to the Westminster Election of 1784. Radical Major John Cartwright stands in the foreground, in a tricorne hat, frock coat and with a staff in his right hand and a sword at his belt. To his left stands Lord Hood, in an Admiral's uniform, declaring 'Two faces under a Hood'. Both appear to be debating, yet do not have an audience. Behind them, a crowd is gathered at the portico of St. Paul's, Covent Garden, to hear the politician Charles Fox. Below is etched a satirical passage, purporting to be the speech of the 'Drum Major' (Major Cartwright). Etching by Thomas Rowlandson, published by Mrs Dacheray of St James's Street, 29 March 1784. Major John Cartwright opposed the Coalition. He was a radical, advocating annual parliaments and manhood suffrage. Lord Hood was a Ministerial candidate for the election, along with Sir Cecil Wray. Voting began on 1 April and closed on 17 May 1784.
