DescriptionGroup portrait of Pacie Ripple, Louie Réné, C.H. Workman, Marie Wilson and Richard Green in Act II of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'The Gondoliers'. The group is photographed against the backdrop of a Moorish palace. Workman, as the Duke of Plaza-Toro, bows in the centre of the stage. To his right, Ripple, as Marco Palmieri, bows to the Duchess (Réné), while to this left Green and Wilson, as Giuseppe and Casilda, dance together. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'The Gavotte - this charming scene in the pavilion of the court of Barataria occurs during an interview, in the course of which the Duke of Plaza Toro endeavours to instruct Marco and Giuseppe in the deportment necessary to their exalted rank as King of Barataria. Aided by his accomplished wife and charming daughter, he instructs the two ex-Gondoliers in the movements of a Gavotte.'
