Title | [Scene from Act I of 'The Gondoliers'] |
Description | Group portrait of C.H. Workman, Alec Johnstone, Marie Wilson and Louie Réné in Act I of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'The Gondoliers'. The group is photographed in and around a gondola; Réné, as the Duchess, looks out from the Gondola cabin, while Wilson, as Casilda, is assisted ashore by C.H. Workman (Duke of Plaza-Toro). Postcard published by Raphael Tuck for the 'Play Pictorial' series. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'The Arrival of the "celebrated, cultivated, under-rated noblemen the Duke of Plaza-Toro", his accomplished wife the Duchess, and his charming daughter Casilda, is most impressive. They appear in a gondola, accompanied by Luiz, their attendant, and though practically penniless, their claim to the respect they consider due to them is nowise diminished. The object of their journey to Venice is to trace the whereabouts of the abducted King of Barataria, to whom the infant Casilda had been married.' |
