Title | [Scene from Act II of 'The Gondoliers'] |
Description | Group portrait of Pacie Ripple, Lillian Coomber, Jessie Rose and Richard Green in Act II of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'The Gondoliers'. Coomber and Rose - as Gianetta and Tessa - stand at the centre of the group, flanked by Ripple and Green (Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri). They pose infront of the scenery of a Moorish palace. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck for the 'Play Pictorial' series. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'Quartette - Marco and Guiseppe are the two Gondoliers who have been raised to the dual rank of King of Barataria pending the settlement of the question regarding the doubtful personality of that exalted individual. Various complications arise which introduce a charming quartette between Marco and Giuseppe and their wives Tessa and Gianetta, in which "in a contemplative fashion" they endeavour "to solve the complicated plot".' |
