Title | [Scene from Act II of 'The Gondoliers'] |
Description | Portrait of John Clulow as Don Alhambra del Bolero, flanked by Pacie Ripple and Richard Green as Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, in Act II of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'The Gondoliers'. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck for the 'Play Pictorial' series. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'Marco and Guiseppe are the twin sons of a gondolier into whose charge the infant son of the King of Barataria was entrusted by the Grand Inquisitor. It is at first understood that one of these two men is the King, as the parent confesses to having "mixed the babies;" and as no proof is forthcoming both are raised to the rank of King till the point is settled. They are here depicted during the course of a dainty song by Don Alhambra, the Inquisitor, "There lived a King".' |
