Description | Full-length portrait of Henry Lytton as Strephon, Clara Dow as Phyllis, and C.H. Workman as the Lord Chancellor in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta, 'Iolanthe'. Lytton and Dow pose on either side of Workman, who, as the Lord Chancellor, parts them with outstretched arms. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck for the 'Play Pictorial' series. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'Act I - The scene depicts the situation where the Lord Chancellor discovers Phyllis and Strephon, the Arcadian lovers, in an affectionate attitude, and he exercises his prerogative as guardian of the ward in Chancery, and separates the pair. Strephon pleads eloquently on his own behalf; the Chancellor is obdurate but finally he has to yield and grants his consent'. |
