Title | [Jessie Rose, C.H. Workman and Henry Lytton in 'Iolanthe'] |
Description | Full-length portrait of Jessie Rose, C.H. Workman and Henry Lytton as Iolanthe, the Lord Chancellor and Strephon in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'Iolanthe'. Rose and Lytton pose holding hands across Workman, who wears ceremonial dress. Rose, as Iolanthe, is dressed as a fairy, with wings. Lytton, as Strephon, wears eighteenth-century costume. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck for the 'Play Pictorial' series. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'Iolanthe is a fairy whose marriage with the Lord Chancellor has caused her to be banished from Fairyland for breaking a fairy law. Strephon is their son, and the play revolves around the love of this Arcadian shepherd for the charming shepherdess Phyllis. As a consequence of his origin Strephon is half a fairy and half a mortal - to use his own words - "My fairyhood is the curse of my existence, my brain is a fairy brain, but from the waist downwards I am a gibbering idiot!"'. |
