Title | Jessie Rose, Marie Wilson and Ruby Gray as Angela, Saphir and Ella in 'Patience'. |
Description | Full-length portrait Jessie Rose as Lady Angela, Marie Wilson as Lady Saphir and Ruby Gray as Lady Ella in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'Patience'. They wear floor-length embroidered gowns and have flowers in their hair. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck for the 'Play Pictorial' series; photograph by Dover Street Studios. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: "The Ladies Angela, Saphir & Ella are the leaders of the group of love-sick maidens, who have, as they express it, become "idealized and soulfully intense" in order to show their devotion to Reginald Bunthorne, the leader of aestheticism. They desert their professions, however, under the influence of Grosvenor, "Archibald the All-right", an idyllic poet, and become "prettily pattering, cheerily chattering, every-day young girls" instead of the former "greenery-yallery, Grosvenor-Gallery" maidens.' |
