Title | [Jessie Rose and C. H. Workman in 'Patience'] |
Description | Portrait of Jessie Rose as The Lady Angela and C.H. Workman as Reginald Bunthorne ('a fleshly poet') in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'Patience'. Workman is photographed sitting on a tree stump, looking up at Rose, who stands behind him with her hands on his shoulders. Her hair is decorated with a wreath of flowers; Workman wears a velvet costume with a large bow at the neck. Postcard published by Raphael Tuck for the 'Play Pictorial' series; photograph by Dover Street Studios. The caption on the reverse of the card reads: 'Lady Angela & Bunthorne - A charming study of Reginald Bunthorne, the fleshly poet, and of Lady Angela, the leader of the troop of "twenty love-sick maidens" who have embraced the aesthetic cult out of devotion to Bunthorne. In the end, the Lady Anglea marries a military duke, and Bunthorne is left without a mate - "In that case unprecedented, single I must live and die. I shall have to be contented with a tulip or lily".' |
