Description | Burdett-Coutts Primary school has its origins in the Church of England School called St Stephen's, founded in 1847. The school in Rochester Street was founded in 1876, under the endowment of Revd Chauncery Hare Townshend and is known today simply as Burdett Coutts School, after Baroness Burdett-Coutts who was an early trustee and supporter. Born in Moreton Place, Pimlico, the Rt Hon William Morris Hughes, Prime Minister of Australia was a former stuudent teacher of the School. He went to Australia in 1884 and became Prime Minister in 1915. An ardent supporter of the Commonwealth he is seen here during a trip to London to be made Privy Councillor.
