Title[Mending Day at Burdett-Coutts School]
DescriptionShows a class in 1916. Burdett-Coutts Primary school has its origins in the Church of England School called St Stephen's, founded in 1847. The school in Rochester Street was founded in 1876, under the endowment of Revd Chauncery Hare Townshend and is known today simply as Burdett Coutts School, after Baroness Burdett-Coutts who was an early trustee and supporter. At many elementary schools girls would spend afternoons sewing, while boys did arithmetic. The clothes would sometimes be sold to raise money for the school.
