Description | On 14 October 1892 Clement Shorter, George Whale, Frederic Hudson, Arthur Hacker and around a dozen others interested in Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), Persian philospher, mathematician, astronomer and poet and the translator Edward FitzGerald (1809-1883) poet and writer, met for a dinner at Pagani's Restaurant in Great Portland Street. They decided to establish an Omar Khayyam Club.Amongst the early members of the club were Thomas Hardy, Edmond Gosse, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H G Wells, E W Jacobs, G K Chesterton, Walter de la Mare, Harold Nicolson and Alfred Munnings. |
